Throughout this course, we learned about the principles of design through 2D art. We used our hands to create physical interpretations of the different Principles. We also got to see the different elements through many projects where we used Photoshop. The overall class was extremely insightful, and I enjoyed it while learning so much.

In Class- Assignment: Scale

For this assignment, we were asked to use our knowledge of scale to re-create a pattern onto a chair. There were two different scales that we were asked to recreate. The first was regular scale and the other was x2 bigger. I think that through this assignment I learned a lot about the way that patterns can be presented matters greatly to the space. For instance, when a pattern is smaller and more compact it adds more detail to a place. While if a pattern is bigger, it can be a central focus of the rest of the theme of the room. For my assignment, I chose to do a stripped design, to emphasize how the smallest change of pattern can make a difference.

Rendering Project

For this project, we were asked to render two on the same floorplans to represent the different color schemes. For the Analogous color scheme, which is more of darker colors, I chose to use a patterned rug with dark floors and a less busy bedspread. In the Commentary color scheme, which is more of warmer colors, I used a flowery bedspread and lighter floors with a lighter rug to give emphasis on the bedspread itself. This was an extremely fun project to do. I have been struggling with using Photoshop and how to render floorplans and other things and this project has really helped me. I have learned so much about color as well, and how you can use different patterns and materials in the rooms to create texture and unity. In conclusion, I got to use the difference of each color rendering in both floorplans, and I really enjoyed doing it.

Rendering Techniques

Throughout the whole class, we got to learn a lot about the different types of rendering techniques and how we can use them to our advantage in interior design. The presentation of our design is very important, especially to a client. with these renders we can roughly display our general ideas before possibly making them into digital or physical models. These are also a great way to see our designs and ideas on paper rather than just in our head.

Pattern-Texture and Line-Shape

For this project, I decided to get all my letters from the city of Boston, Massachusetts. I got the opportunity to fly Boston with my rowing teammates, and we raced in the Head of the Charles Regatta. After the races, we got to explore the city of Boston and visit many places. This was very fun for me, and it caused me to look in so many more places than I would have when looking for the different letters of the alphabet in the city of Boston as a whole. The way I achieved the pattern is that all the letters either come from architecture, décor, or the outdoors of Boston. This project challenged me to look more deeply at the things around me. I think that the most challenging thing that I faced was figuring out how to arrange the letters on the page, so they flowed and created unity among the pictures.

Applying E&P to an Interior

For this in-class assignment, we were asked to apply the elements and principles of design to a space. We were given 10 minutes to look through magazines and materials to design the room with. We were given a living room space with lots of natural light. With the time that we were given, I wanted to create a space that would take in the light but also in the evenings have a good lighting source that can still fill the space with the tall ceilings coming into account. I wanted also to use a theme of rounded pieces of furniture to give the room a more modern look and tie in the black trim on the windows. Overall, I really enjoyed this project. It helped me to be able to think quickly and stay on my toes while looking to design a space.

Value, Change, and Balance

To achieve the 3D aspect of this assignment, I used an origami triangular prism
design. For the color, I used a blue gradient, where there are four ranges of blue. All
blues were found using the color theory. For two of the blues, I added black to create
shade, and I added white for the other two blues to create a hue. Each triangular
prism touches at least one side of another, therefore creating unity and balance.

Group Project

This was one of my favorite assignments for this course. We got to use many elements of design to create a Family and Consumer Science banner for the outside of their department. As a group, we found different pictures that related to each different concentration that Is included in the FACS department. This relates to pattern and texture in the design. We then made all the photos black so that it could emphasize the label at the bottom of each specialty. We also used the element of design, color, in that we used an analogous color scheme at the bottom for the labels. We had a lot of fun creating this project and applying many elements of design. Out of 56 students we placed 2nd in the competition!
